Reflexology is a complementary therapy that is holistic and non-invasive. It can stimulate your body's own self-healing mechanisms.
Reflexology may be as effective as painkillers, according to a new scientific survey
(The Telegraph - 9th April, 2013)
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an holistic, complementary therapy which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the presenting symptoms. While stimulating the body's own healing mechanism, reflexology will relax and help alleviate symptoms.
With ever increasing levels of stress, reflexology can help us cope on a physical, mental and emotional level, thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.
The reflexologist uses their hands to apply gentle pressure to the client's feet (or hands). It is based on the principle that there are reflex points in the feet and hands which relate to all the organs and systems in the body. Pressure on these points:
- Reduces stress & tension
- Increases blood supply to all the organs of the body and improves circulation
- Helps the body eliminate toxins
- Helps the body to achieve balance
What Conditions Can it Help?
Clients use reflexology for many reasons. They typically arrive with a specific condition (or conditions) or problem they wish to resolve. This wonderful therapy addresses the whole person and as everything is connected and effects everything else on every level (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), it is for this reason that people so often find relief.
What Happens In A Typical Session?
The first session starts with a consultation which will provide the therapist with information about the client's lifestyle, general health and medical history.
This will be followed by the treatment. The reflexologist uses their hands to apply pressure to specific points on the feet. The therapist will be able to detect tiny deposits and tensions in the feet and will work extra on these areas.
The client is always advised to drink a glass of water immediately after the session in order to help the body eliminate toxins. It is also advised, if possible, to try and relax after the treatment.
Subsequent treatments will start with discussion of any feedback from the last session followed by the treatment itself, as above.

How does reflexology work?
A reflexologist uses hands to apply gentle pressure to the feet. For each client the application of the therapy is unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and tension in the feet which block vital energy pathways, resulting in illness. By releasing these tiny obstructions toxins are eliminated and the circulation improved, restoring the free flow of energy and nutrients to the body's cells. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.
Frequently asked questions
Will it tickle or hurt?
Reflexology does not tickle. While the feet or hands are being worked, there may be some discomfort, but it is fleeting and is the result of illness or damage to a part of the body.
How long does a session last?
A single session lasts about an hour. The first treatment will be longer, lasting about an hour and a half, since it will start with a consultation, covering the client's lifestyle, general health and medical history.
How will I feel afterwards?
After the first treatment or two the body may respond in a very definite way - you may have a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation or you may feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful but this is transitory. It is, however, vital information as it tells the reflexologist how you are responding to the treatment.
How many treatments?
The course of treatments varies in length and frequency as it depends on each client's needs. This will be agreed after the first treatment. Typically 6 weekly treatments allow for effective assessment of the treatment for a client. Once the body is in tune reflexology may be used to maintain energy and wellbeing and may also be used as a preventative to illness. In such cases treatments may not be as frequent.
Is it safe / suitable for everyone?
Reflexology is generally beneficial for everyone, from young babies to people in their 90s. There are very few contra-indications to reflexology.
Can children have reflexology?
Yes. They usually love it and respond well.
Do you have to have a specific condition to have reflexology?
No. An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relieving tension. It brings the body into balance and so it can be effectively used as a preventative measure to ensure good health.
Are you qualified as a reflexologist?
Yes, I have a Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology.

"I have been to see Amanda now on a number of occasions for Reflexology, and I just can't recommend her and the treatment enough. I have truly never felt so relaxed in my life! I am currently six months pregnant and have had a fairly difficult pregnancy due to kidney stones, and had been back and forth between the hospital. So I decided to see Amanda again and by my second session I had passed the kidney stone within a few weeks finally giving way to the pain I had been suffering for months. I really believe every time I have had the treatment it has realigned my body. It's certainly something I will continue with going forward." Julia Sanford
"Slept much better after each treatment."
"I always felt very relaxed after each session."
"I have been having reflexology treatments from Amanda for 5 months now and have found tremendous benefit from them. Many of the side effects brought on by my multiple sclerosis have either vanished or become a lot easier to deal with. I highly recommend her treatments to everyone."
"Helped ease a back complaint and also helped a migraine (usually I have a monthly migraine which did not take place). Always felt relaxed after a session."
"I found the treatments to be very therapeutic and relaxing. With a lot of different things happening in my body following my most recent birth I was reassured that some of my aches and pains were noticeable in the treatment and therefore not something in my head! This motivated me to seek professional medical care."
"There seemed to be an improvement in my daughter's bowel movements. Her constant cold also has cleared up. She is at a new school and is exposed to lots of new germs. Usually this would mean constant colds going to the chest area."
"This hour was my time to clear the mind of everyday pressures. A strong feeling of happiness and spiritual well being was experienced."
